The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the key issues and problems in establishing a labour market information system in an emerging economy.The paper is structured as follows, section one considers some of the key high level foundation
principles for such systems, section two considers the meso level design principles involved in the implementation of such systems and section three reflects on some issues and problems in the South Africa context, the final section four briefly discusses some issues in labour market information systems and education systems, focusing especially on vocational education and training (VET).
