Abstract:
This paper aims to answer the following two overarching questions: what do we know about rural skills development in South Africa? What are key research challenges (conceptual, policy and methodological) to address as a first step to overcome the country’s rural skills shortages and mismatches? It is worth stating at the outset that little is known about rural skills development per seas most studies and policies concentrate on the sectoral or occupational distribution of skills rather
than their spatial location as such.
