The LMIP hosted its second policy roundtable on 19 March 2014 at Burgers Park hotel in Pretoria. Titled The Emerging Contours of a Credible Institutional Skills Planning Mechanism for South Africa: Towards a Common Perspective, the event brought together senior government policy-makers and researchers to discuss and debate the conceptualisation of the credible institutional skills planning mechanism for South Africa.
The central presentations were made by DHET Deputy Director General Mr Firoz Patel who sketched the broad policy context in which the planning mechanism will operate. The LMIP then undertook to outline the architecture of the evidence-informed skills planning mechanism by Dr Vijay Reddy (HSRC) and Dr Marcus Powell (Centre for Employment Initiatives, UK).
The presentations generated insightful responses, particularly from participants in the panel discussion which followed. The panel consisted of members from the Presidency, expert consultants, the DHET, and the National Planning Commission.
A wide set of inputs was solicited which will feed into the further development of the mechanism. The roundtable report and presentations may be accessed here: lmip.org.za/event/policy-round-table-ii-emerging-contours-credible-institutional-skills-planning-mechanism-south.
